When we heard this week that the Council of Fashion Designers of America will ban fur from designer collections showing on the official New York Fashion Week calendar beginning in September 2026, we applauded the announcement because it’s excellent news for wildlife!

The ban applies to animal furs from animals killed “specifically for their pelts, such as mink, fox, and rabbit.”

It’s cause for celebration as FoA has been railing against the fur industry and educating the public about the horrors of fur for decades.

But there is still work to be done.  In a recent New York Times article, Can I Wear Shearling if I Don’t Want to Wear Fur?” we learned that the fashion industry is using more and more shearling, and its being made to look like fur, even as fur itself has fallen out of favor.  It’s trying to cash in on meat-eaters thinking it’s nothing to use the skins and wool  from lambs who are otherwise eaten rather than letting them go to waste.
