Cheers to Grammy-winning artist, and longtime vegan Billie Eilish for doubling down on her comments, and for refusing to walk back what is true: that you can’t eat meat and claim to love animals.
Eilish was asked by an Elle Magazine interviewer to share a “hill she’d die on,” and she opted for a benign one. That loving animals means you don’t also consume them.
Absurdly, Eilish was bombarded with backlash from meat eaters. Tik Tok commenters flooded to the Elle video, many of them bashing Billie for being “privileged,” which not only dodges her point, but is a lazy take, really—especially since cost-analyses have shown that a diet consisting of whole, plant based foods is cheaper than a meat-centric one.
Eilish didn’t hold back, taking to IG stories to defend her harmless stance: that she was “so tired of standing up for/having empathy for living beings being controversial.” We agree, Billie. It is exhausting to constantly defend something so plainly obvious.
In a pop music landscape where her peers rarely face backlash for things like using live animals in performances and eating meat, it’s infuriating to watch Billie Eilish take heat for saying the right thing.
We applaud her bravery, and her staunch commitment to the animal rights movement.
