This squirrel hunt is an annual fundraiser for the Fire Department of Holley NY. It is the 7th Annual Squirrel Slam and occurred on February 16, 2013. However, in actuality, this is a mass squirrel-killing contest in which children & adults are awarded cash & gun prizes for killing the heaviest squirrels. Friends of Animals and its supporters were there to protest the event.
Two months before a perpetrator poured cleaning solvent on the Huntington Library's corn snake, who lived on display in a glass enclosure, the library heralded the year of the snake with a Chinese Cultural Arts Celebration. Honoring the year of the snake, Friends of Animals is glad the library isn't prompted to fill its aquarium with another snake who belongs in Nature.

New York -- Friends of Animals (FoA), an international animal advocacy group founded in New York in 1957, is descending on Holley, NY on Saturday, Feb. 16, outside the Holley Fire Department from 3 pm - 6 pm to protest the town's annual "Squirrel Slam," -- a squirrel-shooting contest for children and adults under the guise of raising money for the Holley Fire Department.
The American Veterinary Medical Assn. is Poised to Adopt a Devocalization Policy That Will Hurt Animals
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has historically sanctioned devocalization, cutting vocal cords just to stifle a dog's or cat's voice. A dangerous, painful surgery even in the hands of qualified vets, devocalization is brutal punishment for the "crime" of communicating. No vet should ever do this to an animal. No veterinary association should ever condone it. But the AVMA does.
What: Whether working to protect endangered species from canned hunts (in which animals are kept in confined areas) or facilitate low-cost spay/neuter procedures for cats and dogs, Friends of Animals has been at the forefront of animal advocacy since 1957.
