End Animal Killing Contests Like the "Squirrel Slam" in Holley, NY

January 16, 2014 | Take Action

FoA "Squirrel Slam" protest Facebook page.

Did you know that the village of Holley, N.Y.,  is preparing for another bloodbath Feb. 22, the day it plans to host another Squirrel Slam Day.

Last year when Friends of Animals found out about this annual killing contest/shooting competition  in northwestern New York that recruits children and rewards them with prizes after dead squirrels are weighed to determine who killed the heaviest ones, we mobilized supporters and took to the streets to protest the event.

What makes the day even more abhorrent is it is billed a fundraiser for a fire department and semi-automatic rifles are raffled off and cash awards are given as children look on.

Animal killing contests are part of a broader conversation on gun violence.  This event comes just a little over a year after a rifle wielding Adam Lanza committed mass murder at an elementary school, and earlier this week, a 12-year-old opened fire at a middle school and an elderly man fatally shot someone because he was text messaging during a movie.

FoA continues to work with New York state Sen. Tony Avella and other legislators to prohibit killing contests in New York and will once again convene on Holley in February to expose the pattern of abuse rampant in Holley.

1. Please view and share our compelling and informative short video documenting our experiences in Holley, N.Y., challenging the Squirrel Slam contest as part of our continued efforts to ban animal killing contests.

2. Visit the Holley Fire Department website at www.holleyfire.com and write to them or call them at 585-638-6884 and tell them it’s not too late to organize a different fundraiser.

3. Ask your state representatives to introduce bills that would ban such events. For New York residents, contact George D. Maziarz who represents the 62nd District, which includes all of Orleans County. Email him at maziarz@nysenate.gov.

I am not an animal rights activist (I eat meat), or a liberal (I'm centrist), or a city slicker (I live in the country). However, I oppose the squirrel slam. On the fire department website's guestbook, I noticed there was only messages supporting the slam, and a disclaimer saying messages are subject to approval. Apparently it's okay to bash and insult those of us with compassion towards animals, but it's not okay to reason with them as to why our position is valid. This clearly indicates the narrow-mindedness of the fire department.

Society doesn't need another generation of monsters! Enough is enough!

Please stop the Holley Fire Department from running this barbaric event on 22nd Feb 2014. Teaching children that it is good to participate in this event is wrong & shows lack of compassion for other beings. People in the United Kingdom are aware and appalled that this is allowed to happen.

This is really sick. Please stop. Killing animals.

Animals are not toys!

I could see if this was to put food on your table, but this is CRUEL!!! Ppl need to find hobbies that don't include killing animals!!!

Killing sweet, innocent, helpless squirrels in NY, or anywhere, is disgusting and heart breaking. I love squirrels and feed them every chance I get. Only monsters with too much time on their hands and HATE in their hearts, would think of killing squirrels. Please do your utmost to protect them and keep them safe from ALL DANGER!!

There are a lot of wholesome family activities in Rochester ~ at the nature preserve or the zoo the kids could shoot animals with their cameras!

Teaching children to murder defenseless animals for fun is so wrong! Just look at the world today... People killing children with guns...it had to start somewhere? Perhaps like events like this that teaches killing animals = fun!!! Stop this barbaric event and teach our children to respect all living creatures, whether it be man or animal!!!!

I love to watch squirrels, what is wrong with people nowadays. There is no honor or sport in this treatment of them. Some need to get their heads screwed on right. Whatever did a squirrel do to you?
