FoA Challenges Figure Skater Johnny Weir to Stop Wearing Fur

January 22, 2010 | Take Action / Fur

Friends of Animals sent an open letter to Olympic hopeful Johnny Weir.

The American skater is on a quest for the gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. During an interview with the New York Times, Weir boasted smugly that he "looked pretty" in his outfit, which visibly showed fur obtained from a fox on his sleeves.

In the letter, FoA President Priscilla Feral bluntly criticized Weir's love-affair with fur, stating, "Please consider that there's nothing pretty about the fox that suffered and died to trim your outfit. The beautiful fox was likely anally electrocuted, or may have had its head bashed in, only to serve as decoration for someone's performance."

The Olympic optimist not only parades in full length furs, but has been known to taunt his adversaries by sending them hand-drawn caricatures of animals with x's over their eyes in retaliation.

Friends of Animals is urging Weir to stop wearing fur, not only for the sake of animals, but for his own Olympic ambitions. Critics say his admiration for furs have quickly put him in the hot seat and have even over-shadowed his chances for placement in Vancouver.

"In the end, nobody cares what a figure skater wears. You will only be judged on your performance and the strength of your character," Added Feral.

I cannot believe how superficial this guy is. Just like every other fur-wearing person - all they care about is themselves and looking "good" according to them. They are selfish, immature and unevolved people. I hope he loses big time. [Blog editors' note: Weir apparently craves the high drama routine of looking like a victim -- just this week saying he needs extra protection at the Olympic Village because of serious threats from anti-fur advocates. Truth is, that's bunk -- aimed at distracting people from Weir's problem that words just keeping falling out of his mouth. His publicist lied and was unable to offer the evidence -- proof of their allegations that Friends of Animals, much less anyone else, threated Weir.Finaly a reporter for The NY Times asked for such proof. That Weir now says he'll wear FAKE fur is a better idea than all his others, but Weir just seems to make it up as he goes along.]

I truly do not understand people who wear fur. Do they feel so inferior that they need to wear something controversial to attract attention to themselves? How pathetic. There is absolutely no need anywhere in the world for a human being to wear the fur of an animal. It is truly barbaric.

Nothing can justify the barbaric cruelty endured by the innocent animals killed for their fur.

As he says: " It's his choice!", but what choice do these animals have. Even if you don't have any compassion for animals, no one should have to endure a death like this. I pray I live to see the day that this crime is given the precedence that it deserves...

Olympians represent us to the world. I do not want to be represented by someone who doesn't know better than to wear fur. STOP Johnny Weir.

I am absolutely sick at the thought of how animals are tortured for their fur. Is it really true that animals are skinned alive? Why is that not outlawed? I think banning fur altogher would be hard to outlaw, but surely they could make a less brutal way of doing it. I obviously disagree with fur 100%, but the thought of the animals being skinned alive infuriates me. How do we stop this? Don't animal cruelty state laws say something about this? Please let me know how I can help change this before more animals are hurt.

Okay, I'm not the kind of person who is vegetarian and thinks all animals should "Be free", but I do think that killing animals for their fur is truly wrong. Maybe if they're FOUND dead, it would be okay because you aren't hurting it. This is just wrong. There should be a law against it. It infuriates me that a lot of people think that wearing dead animals fur is good and that they will be "cool" if they do. I honestly think that not only wearing an animal's fur is wrong, but it's also plain nasty. It used to be alive, and then you're wearing something that came in contact with it's insides. Disgusting, sick people.

Nothing can justify the barbaric cruelty endured by the innocent animals killed for their fur.
