Cheers
To NYC Council Member Tony Avella for calling for a ban on horse-drawn carriages in New York City. This comes after the death of Smoothie, one more innocent animal who lost his life while being forced to pull a carriage through the smog-filled and crowded streets of NYC.

To Thiru Kumar for winning the 2007 Vendy Award on Sept. 27, 2007 in New York City. The Vendy Awards, a popular annual event, is “ an intense cook-off between the best sidewalks chefs in the city.” Kumar—well known for being kind, generous, and making especially delicious and inexpensive dosas—operates NY Dosas, an all vegan foodcart in Washington Square in Manhattan. You can show your appreciation by stopping by the foodcart, which operates Monday through Friday, 11:30 AM until there’s no more food (usually 4:30 PM).

To President George W. Bush for attempting to increase hunting by ordering federal land management agencies to “facilitate the expansion and enhancement of hunting opportunities and the management of game species and their habitat.” Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns says President Bush’s order will affect “a natural balance among hunter, habitat and wildlife” — as though guns were part of nature’s balance. What’s true of international relations is true for our interactions with the natural world: To achieve a true natural balance, we should learn to live in respectful harmony with nature.

To Connecticut State Senator Donald E. Williams, President Pro Tempore, for approving a $25,000 grant request in taxpayer money to be used to provide horse-drawn carriages to the town of Wethersfield, CT. The request was made by State Senator John Fonfara. This move perpetuates the notion that horses should be exploited to provide entertainment for tourists and residents. Both senators should be taken to task for this frivolous expenditure of taxpayer money that will be used for exploiting animals.

To the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the refuge manager of the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges in Florida for their “pilot project” originally designed to trap/neuter/release feral cats whom it was believed might be responsible for a decline in marsh rabbit population. The thrust of the project changed to trapping and killing raccoons. A refuge should be a safe haven for all indigenous animals.
