Gemmy Industries for manufacturing a product called “Deer Ride”—a toy consisting of hunters who bobble their heads as they sit in a jeep with a deer strapped to the front, while singing “Low Rider” and “ Sweet Home Alabama.” Gemmy claims to lead the way with innovative products, but this item is clearly outdated and shows disrespect for free-living animals. According to Gemmy’s website, this toy is available for purchase in at least two large chains. Please send e-mails or call to let these corporations know that a toy that champions hunting is both outdated and discourteous.

Jeers to:

Actor Rob Lowe, who, according to Des Moines Register, raised his arms in celebration and joked about accidentally killing a goldfinch with a golf ball during an Iowa celebrity tournament on June 6, while others laughed, including University of Iowa Athletic Director, Gary Barta. “That’s my birdie,” Lowe joked, as the bird lay motionless on the ground. Lowe later posed for a picture while dangling the dead bird. Let these celebrity golfers know that accidentally killing a free-living animal is no cause for celebration.

Jeers to:

Presidential candidate hopeful Democratic New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson for his twisted love of killing innocent animals who are trapped on private ranches. According to Martha Rosenberg at Counterpunch [Let Cheney at Him: Richardson the Oryx Hunter, June 18, 2007], the governor feels the killing of a long-horned African antelope during a canned-hunt was his “most memorable” hunt. Please let the Governor know that concerned voters will remember this action in quite a different way.

Jeers to:

The Saltville, Virginia Town Council, whose members voted to have the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conduct a deadly round-up of 215 geese in June. The animals were herded into a corral and hauled off to a poultry processor, thereafter ending up on dinner plates served to homeless people in shelters. Please explain that, among other things, environmental restoration projects offer better and more enlightened solutions than the targeted killing of wild geese. And for people in shelters, or any one else, the healthful choice is always a fresh, plant-based meal.
